The Office of Primary Care and Rural Health (PCRH) is proud to present the Impact Award to Dr. Danielle Howa Pendergrass of Eastern Utah Women’s Health. Raised in Price, Dr. Pendergrass is dedicated to addressing the healthcare needs of the community that raised her. As a women’s health nurse practitioner, she provides access to primary and women’s health services for people in Carbon, Emery and Grand Counties.
Utah women ages 18 to 44 have one of the lowest rates in the nation of preventive medical visits for women of reproductive age. That’s why Dr. Pendergrass’ work is so important. Women in rural Utah often have to travel an hour or more to access reproductive health services. Distance is especially significant for low-income and rural Utah families. Travel can consume scarce resources like gas money, time off work, and child care for other children.
“My mission is to provide healthcare for all women. Anybody who walks through our door can get services,” says Dr. Pendergrass. “I wanted to care for women in rural Utah to ensure they could access the same care and services as people who live in urban areas.”
Lee Moss, former Utah representative to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, nominated Danielle for this award. He said, “Dr. Pendergrass has taught me how much dedication, desire, passion and hard work it takes to own and operate a healthcare practice. She provides high-quality, cost-effective healthcare to her patients.”
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Pendergrass regularly offers educational seminars on a range of topics to support her patients and the community. She is a fellow of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Leader program and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Pendergrass is one of twenty nurses nationwide recognized as a Breakthrough Leader in Nursing by the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. In 2018, she received the University of Utah College of Nursing Young Alumni of the Year Award and was awarded the prestigious George S. and Delores Dore Eccles Graduate Fellowship.
